About Kazan

Kazan is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. Kazan is one of the major economical, political, scientific, educational, cultural and sports centers in Russia. The Kazan Kremlin is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city has a registered brand "third capital of Russia" Kazan - Russia's second city on the number of students. There are 44 higher education institutions, including 19 branches and representative offices of other universities which educate more than 140 000 students. Kazan is the only city in Russia, having both Federal University and two National Research Universities. About 15 000 students are educated in Kazan National Research Technological University in which our Conference will take place. Kazan - one of the few cities in Russia, which has many major word level sports venues. Some of them are built specifically for the Universiade 2013. Championships in Aquatics and the FIFA World Cup are scheduled in Kazan in 2015 and 2018.

Public transportation in Kazan

- A single-line Kazan Metro, the north-southeast Central Line was opened on 27 August 2005. The Kazan Metro has seven stations. Single trip costs 20 rub.
- The Kazan tram system was founded in 1899. 8 routes use 187 km (116.20 mi) of lines and 197 tramcars. Single trip costs 20 rub.

- The Kazan trolleybus (electric bus) system was founded in 1948. Single trip costs 20 rub.
- The Kazan bus system was totally renovated in 2007. All 1444 buses are colored red. Single trip costs 20 rub.

Travel cards that work within the metropolitan area reduce travel to 15 rub on trolley buses and buses, and offer considerable discounts on the metro line. These travel cards can be purchased from the post office.

- On July 1, 2013 the Veli’k bicycle sharing system was launched in Kazan. The system includes 7 self-service bicycle docking stations distributed throughout the centre of Kazan near the most popular city destinations, and 100 bikes. The service is open to everyone from 16 years of age. To access the service, you have to complete a simple sign-up procedure at http://www.veli-k.ru/, and buy a subscription for a suitable period of time. The first 30 minutes of every journey is free of charge. After the first half hour, a service charge applies.

 

Time

Kazan is situated in the Moscow standard time zone (MST), which differs from Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). MST= GMT + 4 hrs.

Currency exchange

The national Russian currency is ruble. All payments for goods and services throughout Russia must be done in rubles. Major credit cards are widely accepted. Foreign currency can be exchanged in banks or currency exchange offices at the airport, hotels or in the city. Exchange rates are always posted.

Electricity

220 V plugs are standard continental European type. British and North-American appliances need an adapter.

Climate

Kazan Climate - temperate continental extreme cold and scorching heat are rare and not characteristic of the city.
The most frequent winds are southerly and westerly average summer temperature + 17 ... 20 °C, in winter  -9 ... -12 °C. The average temperature of the beginning of September is +15 °C.
