The collection of the museum includes more than 1200 minerals from 60 countries, 52 meteorites with a total weight of 192 kg, more than 10,000 mineral samples from 153 deposits of Siberia and the Far East.

Excursion to Museum of History and Culture of the Peoples of Siberia and Russian Far East

Soon after the establishment of the Institute of History, Philology and Philosophy, Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (SB AS USSR), Academician Alexey P. Okladnikov decided to found a museum. It would help popularizing scientific knowledge of ancient Siberian populations and their rich cultures. Nowadays the museum occupies a separate building containing exhibition complex and conservation laboratories of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography. There are the main exhibition (315 square meters), depositary, and restoration and conservation laboratories on a total area of 500 square meters.

The exhibition is arranged according to the cultural-historical approach and divided into archaeological periods (the Paleolithic Age, Neolithic Age, Bronze Age, Early Iron Age, and Medieval Period). One more hall is devoted to the ethnographic materials of Siberian and Far Eastern populations. The purpose of the ethnographic exhibition is to show specific features of the spiritual culture of the autochthonous and Old Believer Slavic populations of Siberia and the Far East. There is a specific focus on decoration patterns, because these are specific for any ethnic culture. Besides, the ethnographic exhibition comprises information about the religious features of the Russian Orthodox people, shamanism and paganism of nomads from the Altai region, Buddhism components of the Buryats, home spirits in the cultures of Khanty, Mansi, and Selkup people, and cult objects of the Amur population.

The expositions at the Museum of History and Culture of the Peoples of Siberia and the Russian Far East have been set up on the basis of integrated and comprehensive approach to the studies of a great variety of the Siberian and Far Eastern cultures. They vividly illustrate various stages in the historical development of this huge region. The museum displays are used in education of students from the Novosibirsk State University (NSU).

Historical-Architectural Open Air Museum

The idea of creating an open-air museum arose in the 1960s, shortly after the organization of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography. The first architectural object was the bell tower of the church from the polar city of Zashiversk, brought to Akademgorodok in 1969 as a result of the Institute’s expedition. In 1971, the church itself was transported.

Today the area of the museum is 46.5 hectares. There are several recreational areas, archaeological, ethnographic, architectural monuments, an experimental site, an administrative building, in which one of the expositions is located. The central exhibit is a masterpiece of Russian wooden architecture - a unique church built in 1700. In the area of archaeological sites stone steles and statues of different eras from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages are represented. The ethnographic zone is a reconstruction of the Mansi clan sanctuary. On the territory of the museum master classes and public events are held, traditional holidays are celebrated. Such use of architectural monuments increases their importance and relevance.

Novosibirsk Museum of the Railway Technology

The museum is named after Nikolai Akulinin, who was the founder of the museum and its first director. The open-air museum presents 17 steam locomotives, 15 diesel locomotives, 12 electro locomotives, carriages and paraphernalia from the 19th and 20th century, mainly from Russian and Soviet production. In addition, some locomotives from the United States, Czechoslovakia and Hungary are exhibited. The museum has also a collection of mainly Soviet cars, and since 2006 some foreign classic cars from other countries.

The museum has also an educational obligation: It organizes seminars and conferences, which cover a wide variety of railway related topics.
